Utility patents protect the general concept and function of an invention. Utility patents are by far the most common of all patents. They have a life of 20 years from their filing date, provided periodic maintenance fees are paid.

* Small entity, e.g. less than 500 employees - add $1,200 for a large entity.

Payment schedule: 25% upfront, 25% upon completing a rough draft of the application, 25% upon filing the application at which point the invention is patent pending. A final 25% is due upon receiving a Notice of Allowance from the Patent Office. If I don't get your patent application allowed, you don't pay that last 25% amount. Plan to pay that last amount, however, as 95% of the patent applications that I file, I get allowed.
